CRUISING WITH CUNARD CRUISE LINE
For over a century and a half, the iconic ships of Cunard have been defining sophisticated ocean travel. They have always been The Most Famous Ocean Liners in the World.
From fabled vessels of the past to her present royal court - Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth - Cunard has carried guests across the great oceans and to the far points of the globe in unparalleled style. The most glamorous names of yesterday and today have made champagne toasts in her salons, waltzed the night away in her grand ballrooms, savoured grand feasts of the finest flavours in her dining rooms, and whiled away hours immersed in fascinating conversation on her decks.
The Cunard Line has a long and illustrious history and tradition, founded in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, a businessman from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the late 1920's Cunard lay down plans for a pair of liners that would be capable of maintaining the weekly service between Southampton and New York. The merged Cunard-White Star Line launched the Queen Mary in 1935 and Queen Elizabeth in 1939.
Almost 70 years later and the names of these two Queens still remain, providing the current Cunard fleet in the form of the Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Mary II. The year 2004 was a momentous year in the history of Cunard. The Queen Mary 2 - the largest, longest, highest, and most expensive ship ever built - was christened by The Queen and made her maiden voyage taking over the transatlantic service between Southampton and New York and became the flagship of Cunard Line.
Only one name evokes the pleasures of a golden era and that name is Cunard, with many firsts over its unique and illustrious history; the QE2 was the first ship to sail 5 million nautical miles and the QM2 is the first merchant vessel to be launched by a member of the Royal family (Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II).
The legendary Cunard experience and heritage is built around exceeding your expectations becoming the byword for comfort, style and luxury, providing arguably the ultimate travel experience.
CUNARD CRUISE LINE, LIFE ONBOARD SHIP
Such is the Immense Potential for Enjoyment and Enrichment on Cunard's Ships
However much time you spend in their elegant company, you could scarcely hope to experience every sociable pursuit on offer. So devote an afternoon to time-honoured pleasures like retreating to a quiet sun lounger with a novel chosen from the well-stocked libraries or traditional deck sports such as quoits, shuffleboard and paddle tennis. Art Auctions, film screenings, whilst drives and themed quizzes also appear on the cunard daily progamme beside wine tasting seminars, photography lessons and dance classes. More energetic activities range from Pilates to aqua aerobics or a workout in the well-equipped gymnasium.
Exercising your mind offers similar choices as Cunard insights, the fabulous enrichment programme, invites you to chart the night skies in the company of Royal Astronomical Society Fellows, to savour the anecdotes of illustrious guest speakers - from explorers to entrepreneurs, playwrights to politicians - or to attend engaging workshops hosted by RADA actors on Queen Mary 2. Sumptuous evening venues await your discovery too. On each of the ships, the splendid Royal Court Theatre hosts dazzling cabaret and rousing concerts, which guests on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth can even appreciate from private boxes. Rediscover the Luxury of "You" Time Onboard Cunard Cruise Ships
There is a strange yet captivating truth about ocean travel: the more you acquaint yourself with the World, the greater your opportunity to escape it - or at least its everyday hassles and pressures. And unwinding always comes naturally aboard the ships, even from the simplest pleasures like a stroll on deck or a soak in the bubbling whirlpools.
Spas Onboard Cunard Cruise Ships
For the ultimate in relaxtion, succumb to exquisite pampering in the ships' tranquil spas. Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria guests can immerse themselves in the myriad delights of The Royal Spa, while Queen Mary tempts with its exceptionally spacious Canyon Ranch Spa. Or bask like royalty in a Middle Eastern Rasul ritual, gloriously invigorated by mineral-rich mud and herbal steam.
You'll find, too, that forays ashore offer serene experiences of their own. So stretch out on horseshoe bays dotted around the Canaries or Greek Isles. Treat yourself to an authentic Finnish sauna or Turkish hamman. Witness majestic Whales off the New England coast or appreciate the silent beauty of Norway's Fjords by kayak. Watch the Roman world go by over a frothy cappuccino in the atmospheric Piazza Navona or sip a delicious cream tea at a beautiful plantation house on Barbados. CUNARD CRUISE LINE SPECIAL NEEDS
You will be pleased to know that guests with disabilities or requiring assistance are welcome aboard Cunard vessels.
Cunard Cruise Guests with Accessible Needs
With lifts and wheelchair accessible routes to all public rooms and the vast majority of deck areas, as well as a number of staterooms adapted for wheelchair users, the aim is to make your stay as relaxing and comfortable as possible. Due to the configuration of the ships, however, wheelchair users and individuals with sight impairments may experience some difficulties in accessing certain areas. Where such individuals would be unable to be safely and comfortably accommodated due to such barriers or other criteria, they may suggest that the guest be accompanied by a companion.
If you are planning to bring a wheelchair or any other specialist equipment on board with you, or if you have any personal requirements, it is essential that you let us at Planet Cruise know at the time of booking so we can advise you appropriately. For the safety of the ship and everyone on board, all wheelchairs and other aids to mobility must be stored within your stateroom when you are not using them.
On voyages that have a call at a port that requires use of the ship's launches to get ashore (shown by an 'A' on the itinerary), it may not always be possible for some guests with disabilities or mobility issues to access the launches or the shore quayside. Every effort will be made to enable access, but you must have some independent mobility in order to step into the launch and out of it on the shore side. Crew are not allowed to lift guests. At the majority of ports visited by ships, Cunard deploy a short ramped low-level gangway to give wheelchair users easy access to shore. However when choosing your voyage please bear in mind that certain places become inaccessible due to large tidal ranges. The effect on the gangway configurations required to negotiate varying height differences between the quay and the ship cause steep gangways, that for safety reasons mean wheelchair users may not be able to get ashore.
Pregnancy and Cunard Cruise Lines
Cunard will not be permitting guests who will have entered the 24th week of pregnancy by the last day of the voyage to travel with them.
All pregnant women are required to produce a doctor's or midwife's letter stating that mother and baby are in good health, fit to travel and that the pregnancy is not high-risk. The letter must also include the estimated date of delivery (EDD) calculated from both the last menstrual period (LMP) and ultrasound (if performed). Cunard and Planet Cruise cannot accept a booking or subsequently carry a Guest unless they comply with the requirements of this clause.
